Beth, I agree it's a MS problem and they should fix it. However, the steps people are suggesting are workarounds (drastic, admittedly) that can sometimes undo problems that third-party software and/or bugs have caused, so they are valid troubleshooting tips. They're not saying it's an OS X problem -- just that re-installing is one way to undo third party problems like bugs, or issues with updating from previously-installed software. (Though, that doesn't ensure the problem won't come back when you also then re-install MS Office!) But I agree it seems like overkill.
